Well, just celebrated my 76th birthday. All except for a period back in the 1980's and early 90's, I have had 'stable vision'.
In the 1980's after my husband and I divorced and he left for Florida, my father died, my mother died and my Aunt Helen died, all in a three year period, I had serious eye problems at that time. It ranged from sloughing of the left cornea (painful beyond imagination) and many laser treatments for hemorrhaging retinas, After all that, I have had stable vision, miraculously, for more than 30 years. During the 80's and early 90's, in New York, I was legally blind and no longer able to drive or easily read .....It was difficult,. I thought that was it.
However, after my move to Florida, physicians here removed cataracts, and behold, I went from 20/300 vision to 20/40 and vision was acceptable to drive, read and even attend nursing school! (That was a forever desire.)
All of that miracle was the result of New York doctors doing so much prior to help me keep my vision .I went back to show them the good news and they were thrilled.
Now however, after being able to live a somewhat normal life visually, my last appointment was disappointing. My physician said my maculars are leaking. Not good. This is all since my blood sugars have been stable and lowered.
My suspicion: By lowering the blood sugars to a 'normal' degree, the pumping of blood up to the eyes has diminished. Therefore the eye area is no longer getting nourished to the extreme it was before. This is totally an uninformed thought.
Because I've had laser to so many areas of the retina (which I wouldn't have changed for a minute), there is no place to laser to seal the macula without destroying permanently, the little vision I have. I'm also told that the 'gel' that holds everything in place on the retina and macula is 'falling off' the back of the eye and causing 'chunks' of vision to disappear. Recently when looking at a person's face, the left side of their mouth disappeared. That is an area of vision that is now gone.
With this in mind, I've decided to try and 'heal' this systemically. That means using diet to try and give that eye area nourishment with a limited amount of blood flow because my (I think) ocular vessels are not pressing high blood sugar levels to the eye. Carrot juice every day and Vitamin C may be helpful. They talked about an only option of injections into the eyes which I did have once years ago with no positive result. Not sure I'll consider that again.
Well here we go. I have to explore physicians in my town who can at least be available if I have pain, (which in the eye is unbearable) from any conditions regarding this.
I also have always checked out 'what ifs" and may have to actually avail myself of some services if my concerns come to pass. My actual hope is that I can keep my Earthly vision until my demise.
Wish me luck! Until next time......
