My first insulin pump was from Minimed, made in Finland. It was a simple screen, bold numbers and an easy way to automatically deliver insulin by pressing a button without even looking at it. I would wear it on my bra and while in a restaurant, would just press my blouse and the simple sound designated how many units I delivered. That was the #507 pump and I received it on Thanksgiving Day in 1997.
Remember, I was still skeptical and was just looking for a reason not to like it. The first morning I woke after having it on all night and being aware of it, was a day we always went out to breakfast. My usual handling of going out for breakfast was to take a blood sugar, load up an insulin syringe and put it in the little carrying case and leave the house. Now, I took my blood sugar and LEFT THE HOUSE! Upon arriving at the restaurant in my life before the pump, I would order breakfast, wait for it to be delivered to the table, get up, wait for a turn in the ladies' room, go in, take my insulin and come back to the table often to cooler food. (I'm someone who LOVES very hot food and /or drink). Well this time when the waitress came to the table with my breakfast, I just touched my blouse, delivered the insulin and began to eat breakfast.
"Wow. I have to think about this."
I suspect I had a light bulb moment! I might like this idea but we'll see. Actually if I did like this, I could feel embarrassed for not exploring these options for so many years.Ah, ego.
More next week......
