The Drama is Over

It's almost a week now since I had knee surgery and I have to say, I've been well treated, not much pain and quite frankly, I was thinking like a big baby before the whole thing.  As I'm getting older, I seem to be a little less courageous.  Time to get back in the groove and just "do what has to be done" and move on.

Now that I'm retired again, I am taking time to completely take good care of my blood sugar, my diet and make sure I give my body and spirit proper attention.  I've not had any surgery on legs or feet before and do know diabetics have to be very wary of good care.  I do have a fear of any possibility of an amputation.

Blood sugars:  some people think I over do it.  I check my glucose several times a day depending on what I'm doing.  Right now the blood sugars are dipping up and down because of the stress of the surgery and some of the meds I'm taking, i.e. antibiotics, Advil and Tylenol.  So even if I get up at 3am for a bathroom break (which I don't do often), I check the glucose and if it's really out of line, can correct it with my pump.

Because I've been 'insulting' my body for so many years, (70), sticking needles in like a VooDoo doll, the absorption has become a problem.  It works well if I need more than 5 units, I use a syringe with insulin.  If I need less than 5 units of insulin, I can use the pen which injects more shallow than a syringe and 3 units or less, can program the pump.  I'm anxious to get my A1C in December because before I moved here and left my job, the A1C was the highest it had ever been.  Not even going to tell you.  But I will in December!
