I was doing everything right. Because I knew I would probably be under stress, making plans at the last minute, coordinating everything so I could meet my brother at the correct hotel and bringing the proper clothing for the weather as well as for the occasion I was prepared!. l also brought an extra glucose meter in case my regular one had a problem and insulin as well as syringes just in case I had any problems with my insulin pump. All of this was completed within 24 hours.
I got up at 5am, arrived at the airport at 6am and left on a 7am flight. I made sure I walked my 5,000 steps while in Atlanta Airport on a 2 hour layover and was sure to check my glucose . My blood sugar was 300! I decided to wait to eat anything until I saw my blood sugar start to drop after taking a proper bolus. It never did! The glucose meter read 300 plus continually! There was no way I could give myself a larger bolus than what the pump was calling for because here I was, in the middle of a trip and I certainly didn't want an emergency out there. I started checking my blood sugar hourly (no one noticed and if they did, no one cared). I was 300 all the way through 2 flights, two hour boluses, much walking, drinking plenty of water since I knew bathrooms would be no problem and when I got to my hotel, it was STILL 300! I decided to bolus insulin from an injection and still .....THREE HUNDRED! Well, at this point I was still taking blood glucose readings every hour until at 10pm that night, it finally began to drop. Of course it dropped too low and the M&M's came out at 2am.
Once that ridiculous scenario ended, my blood sugar suddenly slipped back into its normal mode and I guess we'll never know exactly what happened. I had changed my site, changed the tubing and did everything to make sure there was no technical problem. Physicians talk about insulin resistance and stress causing cortisol levels to go up and cause high blood sugars but there seems to be nothing to do about this.
I just kept battling the 'forest fire' every few hours and of course if it lasted more than a day at that level, would call my doctor. This does happen occasionally and is the perfect example of
YOU'RE DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT AND IT'S NOT WORKING!
Have courage and hang in there. Don't let that kind of a day have you fall 'off the wagon' because it's not your fault and you will get a handle on it. Your system should go back into the routine that your body really wants and if it doesn't, do call your doctor .
Be well my friends................
